The Perfect English Country House

17th century Oswaldkirk Hall for sale for £4 million

Described by Candida Lycett Green as “a fine and architecturally distinguished house, built in the reign of William and Mary” in her 1994 book The Perfect English Country House, Oswaldkirk Hall in the North Riding of Yorkshire is at the heart of the setting of Julian Fellowes’s fictional Downton Abbey. It was “built to impress” and could indeed have been a perfect starter home for Lady Mary Crawley and her late husband Matthew.

The 8,955 square foot main house was built circa 1690 and centres around an impressive reception hall. In addition there are three reception rooms featuring original paneling, two bedroom suites and six further bedrooms. Further accommodation is provided in the form of two cottages and domestic outbuildings.

An outdoor swimming pool and all-weather tennis court adjoin the property and in addition to formal gardens, there is a kitchen garden, farmland and woodland. The land has formed part of a shoot run by neighbours and local farmers but this can be terminated at the end of the 2013/2014 season.

In addition to the main house the property comes with two cottages and various outbuildings
The setting is pure rural bliss
The house was sold with 985 acres and “almost the whole village of Oswaldkirk” in August 1933

Currently owned by David and Sara Craig – who have opened the grounds as part of the National Garden Scheme – the Oswaldkirk Hall estate includes some 191 acres of land and comes with shooting rights over a further 200 acres. Agents Roundthwaite & Woodhead and Savills seek £4,000,000.
