The king of rentals

A 39th floor apartment in The Pierre Hotel in New York becomes the city’s priciest rental at a staggering £327,000 per month

Whilst the most expensive apartment currently available to rent in London is a 9,307 square foot 7th floor flat in Knightsbridge’s One Hyde Park at £195,000 per month ($297,000 or €268,000 per month), the equivalent in New York comes in the form of a £327,000 per month ($500,000 or €451,000 per month) 4,786 square foot unit on the 39th floor of The Pierre Hotel.

Available for short or long-term rental through Town Residential and situated at 2 East 61st Street, the 6-bedroom apartment on offer is two floors below the building’s penthouse – which was initially offered for sale in 2013 for £82 million ($125 million or €113 million) and then relaunched for just £41 million ($63 million or €57 million) in January 2015.

Aside from having the privacy that stems from occupying the entire 39th floor, tenants will benefit from a private elevator and full hotel services including butler services, a 24/7 concierge, “pet pampering”, twice daily maid service and use of the hotel’s chauffeur-driven Jaguar. The marketing agent describes it as “truly fit for a CEO, royalty or head of state”.

Just before he died in 1934, Charles Pierre, the man who built and ran The Pierre, commented: “It will take years to discover whether society will find itself again. Society no longer exists. Today it’s: How much money have you? Yesterday, it was: Who are you?” The person who rents the 39th floor will no doubt be someone who asks the first of the two questions.
