The 12-inch long hallmarked was commissioned by Vickers from The Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Company as a gift to the works manager of Vickers Brooklands, Percy Maxwell Muller MBE, and has passed by descent through his family.

Maxwell Muller is best known for his association with the British aviators John Alcock and Arthur Brown – who made the first non-stop transatlantic flight in June 1919 – through the modifications he oversaw to their Vickers Vimy Bomber. One of the propellers from the plane was subsequently given to Maxwell Muller and was displayed at Heathrow airport before being given to the Brooklands Museum at Weybridge.
