Rowling in the Depp

Rowling in the Depp – JK Rowling pays £22 million for a yacht – the Amphitrite – previously owned by Johnny Depp

Author JK Rowling has ignored the saying: “If it f**ks, floats or flies: Rent it, don’t buy it and don’t marry it!” and splashed out a cool £22 million ($32 million or €29 million) buying a yacht that was previously owned by the actor Johnny Depp.

The Amphitrite – which was built by Turquoise Yacht Construction and originally called Anatolia – has the look of a 1930s gentleman’s motor yacht but was actually built in 2001
Joanne “Jo” Rowling OBE FRSL (pen names JK Rowling and Robert Galbraith) and her husband Neil Murray are said to have fallen in love with the yacht after having holidayed onboard recently

The Harry Potter creator, whose fortune is said to top £580 million ($842 million or €771 million), is said to have fallen in love with the Amphitrite – which was previously called the Vajoliroja in honour of Depp’s then wife Vanessa Paradis and their children Lily-Rose and Jack – when she holidayed on it recently.

Built in 2001 and refitted in 2008 by Depp, the 156’2” five cabin vessel has the look a 1930s gentleman’s yacht but features state-of the-art technology and toys such as inflatable stand-up paddle boards, waterskis and a two-man kayak. It is described as being styled so as to recreate the “romance of a bygone era” with a “lavish, bohemian interior, pieced together with vintage velvet, Art Deco furniture and objets d’art”.

Johnny Depp took the yacht to Venice in 2010 when he was there to film “The Tourist” with Angelina Jolie and Steven Berkoff

Those on a slightly more limited budget can charter the Amphitrite through Burgess Yachts. She is available for summer cruising in the Adriatic and West Mediterranean for between £74,000 and £92,000 per week ($107,000 and $134,000 or €98,000 and €122,500) and in the Caribbean in winter months for between £87,000 and £101,000 per week ($126,000 and $147,000 or €115,000 and €135,000).

So much for socialism. All hail the new Shemara: JK Rowling is most definitely now the new (Lady) Norah Docker.
