Stunning carmine red 1953 Jaguar XK120 roadster heads to auction at the RM Auctions Hershey sale

The final scene of the 1999 film Cruel Intentions sees Reese Witherspoon driving out of New York in a 1956 Jaguar XK140 roadster. At the RM Auctions Hershey sale on 10th October, bidders have a chance to buy an earlier model of this iconic Jaguar classic.

Featuring similar 54-spoke chrome wire wheels on period wide whitewall tires to the car in the film and finished in carmine red, the 1953 Jaguar XK120 roadster on offer is a head-turning vehicle that looks utterly stunning. It features a 160hp, 3,442cc DOHC inline six-cylinder engine and a four-speed manual transmission and is presented in show standard condition. The vehicle’s interior features a biscuit Connolly leather interior and Wilton wool carpeting.

New, this 102-inch wheelbase car cost some £2,463 ($4,000 or the equivalent of £21,978 or $35,693 today) and though Jaguar expected it to be a low-volume seller, it proved so popular that between 1948 and 1954, a total of 12,055 XK120 roadsters, coupés and drophead coupés were produced.

In Cruel Intentions, Ryan Phillipe as Sebastian Valmont pledges his Jaguar in a bet with his step-sister but ultimately dies instead after being hit by a taxi. The winning bidder on this Jaguar won’t have to do anything quite so extreme; instead, they’ll just have to factor in paying something in the order of the £67,705 to £80,025 ($110,000 to $130,000) price guide that the car is estimated to achieve.
