Modern Millicent

Modern Georgian style country house for sale for £19.5 million – complete with bowling alley and ‘Indian room’ with LED ‘night sky’ ceiling

Property developers Gerard and Caroline Ayrton-Grime don’t do things by halves. Having moved a Georgian mansion from the bottom to the top of a hill, they most recently constructed a Georgian style house outside the wealden hamlet of Lurgashall, near Petworth in West Sussex. It is for sale for £19.5 million ($28.8 million or €24.8 million).

Quirkily named ‘Millicent’, the 17,776 square foot house is described as being “a magnificent state-of-the-art modern home with the proportions of a classical Georgian country house” that is “both hugley impressive and tasteful” by selling agents Savills. As well as three reception rooms and seven bedrooms, the vast property has some unusual extras. There is a lift to all four floors, a cold room and a lower ground floor leisure suite that includes a party room with a bar and dance floor, a cinema, a snooker room, an ‘Indian sitting room’ made from Haveli stone with an LED ‘night sky’ ceiling and a two-lane ten pin bowling alley with ultra violet illumination.

    1. A good example of modern design that respects classical traditions. I am not sure about the interior but that can easily be updated but the floor plan is superb and ideal for a family.

    2. Fabulous choice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Another great modern house!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Much better than all those drafty, dark, damp English Victorian places that need the wrecking ball!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • I think i might start investing in wrecking balls you never know__Rod might become prime minister on day.

    3. Mental price tag, it will never make it. Petworth is a pretty enough area but horrible to get to and from, traffic is always terrible at weekends and the local roads are 40 mph speed limit.

    4. I would imagine the new owners don’t do “roads” and probably helicopter there. Come to think of it the developers missed a trick not building in a helipad and garage for the chopper.

    5. I concede that I am probably coming from a place of jealousy… but am I the only one of your Dear Readers who finds this house a mixture of awesome and ghastly? The outside is (well, to me,) rather lovely, but the inside looks as though designed by/for chavs who have won the lottery.
And never mind the helipad, they have cleverly not let you see where the garage is…a small separate building or at basement level?
