Highlights of Monterey 2015

Anthony Brown chooses three of his favourite lots at this weekend’s RM Auctions’ Monterey 2015 sale

 

Yesterday saw the start of the annual RM Auctions Monterey sale in California and here below we choose three of the highlights.

 

1953 Bentley R-Type Continental Fastback Sports Saloon by H. J. Mulliner – Guide price: £639,000 to £767,000 ($1 million to $1.2 million, €900,000 to €1.1 million)

First owned by Aristole Onassis, this Continental is described as having “the swiftness of a Ferrari, the driver-friendly agility of an Alfa Romeo, and the luxuriant comfort of a Rolls-Royce in one elite, built-to-order package that cost $18,000 when new (the equivalent of £103,000, $161,000 or €145,000 today). The 4,566 cc car sold yesterday for £773,000 ($1,210,000, €1.1 million).

 

1967 Aston Martin DB6 Mk I Shooting Brake by Radford – Guide price: £352,000 to £416,000 ($550,000 to $650,000, €495,000 to €585,000)

Offered on Saturday and owned until now by the Weiss family, this Goodwood Green shooting brake has been primarily kept in Oyster Bay, Long island, New York since new. It has not been driven in rain since 1985 and is presented in wholly original condition. It is described as “a vacation vehicle par excellence”.

 

1948 Tatra T87 – Offered without reserve; guide price: £96,000 to £128,000 ($150,000 to $200,000, €135,000 to €180,000)

Also offered on Saturday is a rare Tatra, a car produced “based upon the aerodynamic principles of Paul Jaray, the pioneering Hungarian engineer. The model was “a favourite ride of German officers during World War II” and now, given its rarity, “will be the centre of attention”. It has been displayed in a private car museum for a number of years and has been rarely driven.
