A selection of five of our favourite cars on offer at RM Sotheby’s January sale

 

On the 19th and 20th January 2017, in Phoenix, Arizona, RM Sotheby’s will conduct a mammoth sale of classic and modern cars. Here we choose five of the most interesting lots on offer.

 

1960 Willys Jeep Gala Runabout – £20,500 to £28,600 ($25,000 to $35,000, €24,100 to €33,700 or درهم‎‎91,800 to درهم‎‎128,600)

Presented in “exceptional” Cerulean blue paintwork with a striped, fringed top, this wacky runabout would be the perfect accessory for any super yacht owner. Recently restored, the car is offered without reserve.

 

 

1996 Porsche 911 GT2£896,000 to £1.2 million ($1.1 million to $1.5 million, €1.05 million to €1.4 million or درهم‎‎4.4 million to درهم‎‎5.5 million)

Representing yet another example of the trend for 1980s and 1990s cars selling for exceptional sums, this yellow peril is capable of going from 0-60 miles per hour in less than 4 seconds. It has 20,500 miles on its clock and was originally delivered with Japanese specifications. It has now been adapted for use in the US.

 

1973 Volkswagen ‘The Thing’£16,000 to £24,000 ($20,000 to $30,000, €19,000 to €29,000 or درهم‎‎73,000 to درهم‎‎110,000)

“The most fun possible for the money”, this Pumpkin orange “conversation piece” is one of 90,000 produced between 1968 and 1963. It is described as being something that “everyone from the kids to the family dog will love” and RM Sotheby’s go as far to add: “There is simply no better thing than this Thing”.

 

 

1968 Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman£73,000 to £98,000 ($90,000 to $120,000, €86,000 to €115,000 or درهم‎‎331,000 to درهم‎‎441,000)

Weighing in at 7,350 pounds, this long wheel base beast of a vehicle has been in Seattle for most of its life. It seats four in luxury in the passenger compartment and “displays an elegance not seen in today’s Cadillac and Lincoln executive transportation”.

1939 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Special Roadster by Sindelfingen – £6 million to £6.9 million ($7.4 million to $8.4 million, €7.1 million to €8 million or درهم‎‎27 million to درهم‎‎31 million)
Undoubtedly the star car of the sale, this one-off Mercedes-Benz was commissioned by the art and interior décor boutique owner Rolf Horn of Gebrüder Horn, Berlin. It is 17’5” long and is lauded as “simply, a singular car”.
