Frederiksen Collection of superb classic cars sells for £16 million against pre-sale estimate of £25 million
On Saturday, one of the finest car collections in the world was sold in Denmark and unlike many other sales in recent weeks, 92% of the 48 lots sold and a total of over £16 million ($24 million) was achieved.
Amongst the lots from the Frederiksen Collection to be hammered down was the one-off 1973 Rolls-Royce Phantom VI by the Maserati designer Pietro Frua previously featured on these pages. It achieved an impressive £360,000 against a guide of just £200,000 to £250,000 ($310,000 to $388,000) whilst another star was a 1939 Lagonda LG6 Rapide that smashed its pre-sale estimate of £300,000 to £370,000 ($460,000 to $560,000) and sold for £540,000 ($730000).
Another big achiever came in the form of a 1930 Dusenberg Model J ‘Disappearing Top’ roadster. It sold for £1.76 million ($1.98 million) against a guide of £1.7 million to £2.1 million ($2.6 million to $3.1 million) and became “the most valuable car ever sold at auction in Denmark” according to Bonhams.
Though many estimated the sale would achieve £25 million ($38 million), Henrik Frederiksen was quite happy with the outcome. Of it, he remarked:
“I’m absolutely delighted, Bonhams has done an incredible job. I now have to say goodbye to my wonderful cars, but I couldn’t be happier as I know each will bring joy to their new owner. It’s quite astounding how many people turned out for the day, plus so many people bidding from across the world”.
