Classic cars continue to defy other markets and with each auction, prices continue to rocket. With such things as 1980s Peugeot 205 GTis selling for up to £150,000 and certain 1990s Porsches achieving £1.2 million, many think the market has gone bonkers and a forthcoming lot will do nothing to confound such analysis.

On 8th February, in Paris, RM Sotheby’s will offer a 1952 Volkswagen Type 1 Beetle at an estimate of £45,000 to £70,000. It had one Swedish owner from new until 2014 and though termed a “barn find”, is really nothing but a rust bucket.

The example offered is one of the last split-rear screen cars produced and aside from coming with its original bodywork, paintwork, trim, engine, gearbox, tools and luggage, it also comes with its first owner’s 1950s skis. The car has 48,000 miles on its clock.
