Bargaining for charity

Former Harrods buyer offers tips on how to charity shop

Don’t sniff your noses up at charity shops. They can be a goldmine for bargains and a source for designer goods at knockdown prices. Victoria and David Beckham donated their clothes to the British Red Cross store in Old Church Street last November and other regular donors include Lilly Allen, Michael Aspel, Elen Rives.

Buyers flocked to purchase David and Victoria Beckham’s cast offs in November 2013

One of our readers – a former fashion buyer for Harrods – shared her success at the Kings Road Oxfam store in Chelsea, London with us yesterday after she managed to buy:

–       A pair of Jimmy Choo heels that had never been worn for £39.99. New, the cost would have been around £499.

–       A pair of Gucci heels that, though slightly worn, were in good condition. Also priced at £39.99, these shoes would have cost approximately £799 new.

–       A pink Prada makeup bag that would have cost £149 new. In perfect condition, the item was just £39.99 also.

Our reader spent £119.97 in total. New, these items would have cost £1,447 and thus a saving of £1,327.03 was made whilst supporting Oxfam’s work. A win-win, surely?
