In the 1970s and 1980s, The Bishops Avenue became the favoured haunt of deposed dictators and exiled billionaires. Its cache has somewhat gone south in the years since and though properties there still command multi-million figures, many have languished on the market for many years first. A fine example of a typical home on the road is The Fountains. It has just come to the market for £15 million.

Suitably for Arabic buyers, the selling agents Knight Frank make specific reference to the house having “majilis” (“private places where guests, usually male, are received and entertained”) but bizarrely for super-car loving sorts, there is just one garage. Now, surely, that’s anything but large.
