Richard Young Gallery hosts a private view of ‘Anarchy in the UK’

On Thursday 7th April, Richard and Susan Young hosted a private view of their latest exhibition, Anarchy in the UK, at their gallery in Kensington. Guests numbered Charlie Gilmour, Nancy Dell’Olio and Daniel Lismore and most notably guitarist Glen Matlock put in an appearance to discuss his time as part of the original line-up of the Sex Pistols.

Featuring never-seen-before images from Young’s archive and held to coincide with #PunkLondon, this striking exhibition tells the tale of the era of punk rock and the rise of the likes of the Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Jam, Siouxie and the Banshees, Blondie and Billy Idol.

Though probably the most notable photograph displayed is of the Sex Pistols signing their contract with A&M outside Buckingham Palace, others capture equally fascinating moments. Of shots he captured of the band’s 1976 gig at The Notre Dame Hall just of Leicester Square, Young recalls:

“The audience were wild, everyone was wearing tartan kilts and trousers, safety pins, ragged T-shirts and sporting Mohican hair cuts, all influenced by Vivienne Westwood. It was the embodiment of anti-establishment with loads of testosterone and raw energy in the room. When they got on stage the crowd went wild, jumping, pushing and pogoing, there was lots and lots of spitting. I was so happy I’d worn my beanie as I was covered in spit at the end of the gig! The Evening Standard used the shots and the rest is history”.

Anarchy in the UK is on display until 31st May 2016. Prices for the works on offer start at a most reasonable sum of just £60.
