A Symbolist Salmon

A Symbolist Salmon – Salmon Waters, Ireland – 1926 to 1927 – Glenlough, Ireland – Rockwell Kent – Oil on panel – Trinity House – £65,000 ($94,000 or €83,000)

Stunning work by Symbolist artist Rockwell Kent for sale for £65,000

Rockwell Kent (1882 – 1971) was an artist who found inspiration in nature. He travelled extensively in his native America but loved Ireland more than anything else and described his time there in 1926 to 1927 as “four months of such happiness as, but for my loyalty to other happy times, I would call the very happiest of all my life”. Now, a stunningly serene oil on panel painting of his from that period – titled Salmon Waters, Ireland – is for sale.

A Symbolist Salmon – “Salmon Waters, Ireland”

Of the work by the Lenin Peace Prize winning Kent that he is currently offering, Steven Beale of Trinity House Paintings in Mayfair comments:

Salmon Waters was painted between 1926 and 1927, whilst the artist was in Glenlough, Ireland, seeking inspiration in the stark beauty of the countryside. As with many of Kent’s works from this period, the composition is filled with strong horizontal lines with rich, somewhat surreal colours that convey the Symbolist spirit and enhance the beauty and mystery of the natural world”.

“Despite being a keen political activist it was nature and the natural world which Kent truly admired, seeking inspiration in the austerity found in wild landscapes. This was rooted in a transcendentalist tradition, and of which this work is a perfect example, with its atmospheric use of colour, a landscape devoid of figures and an emphasis of the spiritual within the landscape”.

Trinity House seek £65,000 ($94,000 or €83,000) for the 16 inch by 20 inch painting, which comes with a fittingly appropriate traditional American frame.
