A Starck 4×4

1973 Ferves Ranger – Philippe Starck – RM Auctions Battersea sale, 7th September 2015

Eccentric Ferves Ranger off-roader once owned by Philippe Starck heads to auction

The season for viewing and buying the finest automobiles is once again upon us and the undoubted standout highlight of the forthcoming RM Auctions Battersea sale is a truly eccentric beast of a vehicle: A left-hand-drive 1973 Ferves Ranger.

Formerly owned by the designer Philippe Starck, the anything but common “cousin of the Fiat 500 and 600” – only 600 were produced, only 50 remain – is said to be capable of “cover[ing] terrain which no other vehicle could traverse, which was aided by a very low gear ratio”.

It is presented in its original green colour scheme with a black hood and a white vinyl with green and yellow stripe motive interior and has an 18 bhp, 499 cc air-cooled two-cylinder engine. Of this “woodland walker” (which takes its name from Ferrari Veicoli Speciali – Ferrari Special Vehicles), the catalogue description states: “It would be difficult to find a more unassuming yet capable compact off-roader”.

The car is offered without reserve at the RM Auctions Battersea sale on 7th September.
