Example of America’s finest era of automotive excellence, a 1953 Chrysler Special coupé by Ghia, heads to auction

Cars have shaped America like no other visual form, except perhaps for movies, and though today’s offerings are somewhat grey, that country’s creations in the 1950s were especially spectacular. An example of such is to be offered at the RM Auctions Driven by Disruption sale on 10th December in the form of a 1953 Chrysler Special coupé by Ghia that comes with a guide of £460,000 to £591,000 ($700,000 to $900,000, €651,000 to €837,000).

Another view of the vehicle

A “landmark styling trendsetter”, the car on offer is one of just eighteen produced and is credited as being the vehicle “that finally broke Mother MoPar from its stodgy styling origins and put Chrysler on its path to an era of brilliance of Forward Look cars later in the 1950s.

Originally supplied to its first owner in Switzerland, the two-tone light and dark green metallic Chrysler sits on a standard-wheelbase, 125.5-inch New Yorker platform and with a modified semi-fastback roofline. It comfortably sits four adult passengers and rightly remains a “touchstone for the company’s designs both past and present”.
