Britain’s most stunning bungalow available for £2.5 million
Whilst Strutt & Parker have yet to achieve the £8 million asking price they seek for the Grade I listed Georgian mansion Mamhead House, buyers on a more limited budget can acquire a smaller property on the estate named The Orangery.
Built in 1740 and later extended to the designs of Robert Adam, this is possibly the grandest gardener’s cottage in England. This 3,615 square foot 4-bedroomed property, which stands in gardens designed by Capability Brown, is Grade II* listed and features a domed cupola and views toward the Exe estuary and Lyme Bay. Also included in the sale is a 2-bedroomed boat house, a summer house and 60 acres of land.
Restored by current owners Sir Michael and Lady Field, The Orangery has had £500,000 sliced off its asking price since it was launched to the market in the summer of 2012. Of why they are selling Sir Michael, the former chief executive of WHSmith, told The Telegraph’s Christopher Middleton:
“We’ll be incredibly sad to leave this house… I’ve spent the past 10 years restoring the gardens here. I must have planted a thousand magnolias and azaleas”.
“I’ll miss sitting out by the boathouse beside the lake. It’s just that our grandchildren are an important part of our life, and it’s a long way for them to come and see us now”.
Knight Frank now seek £2.5 million for this most exceptional bungalow.
