Twitter’s gone One Direction

One Direction have more influence on UK Twitter users than David Cameron, Stephen Fry and Piers Morgan

Piers Morgan’s public spat with Jeremy Clarkson has made headlines in recent days, but according to research by PeerIndex, the chat show host is ahead of the automotive expert in terms of his influence on British users of Twitter.

Piers Morgan is ahead of Jeremy Clarkson in terms of his influence over Twitter users

PeerIndex compiled the report by analysing more than 10 billion messages from over 150 Twitter users and of it a spokesman commented:

“We focused only on whether other people in the UK were responding to, retweeting or engaging with a tweeter… Our maths also assessed who the people engaging with an influencer are. So a retweet from someone highly influential is worth more than a retweet from an average person. The number of followers does not factor in the weighting”.

The report, which also puts the five main members of One Direction ahead of David Cameron and Stephen Fry, puts Morgan is eighth position ahead of Stephen Fry in eight, Simon Cowell at twelfth and Caspar Lee, a web blogger, at twenty-fifth.

Lee’s most popular remark sums up the attitudes of many to the power of the site. It read: “If you don’t tweet about it, did it ever happen?”
