Out of Fashion - London and New York Fashion Weeks have become dominated by "The Smug Club"

London echoes New York in bemoaning what its Fashion Week (and other events) have become dominated by

Earlier this month, the New York Post’s Raquel Laneri reported that New York Fashion Week had become “a bit stilted, passé… corporate and creatively hollow… a pain in the ass”. She referenced fashion grandees as now being of the view that “it feels more like a game show or a reality show” and suggested the majority of attendees are just super-connected publicists and bloggers.

There is no room for anyone other than Alexa Chung and her over-hyped cronies at London Fashion Week

In London, similarly Fashion Week is simply the preserve of ‘The Smug Club’ headed by Alexa Chung, Daisy Lowe and their equally vacuous coterie. The Evening Standard best illustrated this last week when they went as far as to reference Chung as “fabulous” and a “British icon” despite her being just 32 years old. Elsewhere, the “It Girl” also found time to “take over Vogue’s Snapchat for London Fashion Week” (which she accomplished in her usual “me, me, me” manner) whilst David and Victoria Beckham’s 16-year old son, Brooklyn, was commissioned to conduct a photoshoot for Burberry.

The acreage devoted to these “front row fixtures” is ridiculous in view of the fact that they’re only where they are because of who and not what they know. It is time the media gave space to some real talent and it is time Alexa Chung took a back seat.
