Monica Lewinsky’s soiled clothing fails to sell
Last week, we reported on an auction of items owned and relating to Monica Lewinsky, President Kennedy, Wallis Simpson and Adolf Hitler.
Whilst the Wallis Simpson jewellery, gloves and bags sold for prices ranging between $8,907.60 and $14,350.80 in Nate D. Sander’s auction, none of the other items we mentioned even reached their reserves. Though the former White House intern’s items were tipped to reach $500,000, the highest bid was only $12,650.
Plainly the prospect of one of Miss Lewinsky’s soiled dresses, pieces of bloodstained leather from the car in which JFK was assassinated and signed copies of Hitler’s Mein Kampf don’t have a great deal of appeal. This somewhat restores our faith in humanity.

What an interesting auction. I wonder whether prices reflect an upturn in peoples optimism – low because none of these events are particularly positive or inspiring. Many people used to say about correlation between stock prices and dress length. Could this be that people are once again feeling more optimistic?
