Did you know?

Sir Cliff Richard abuse

A new column revealing facts you may or may not already know

Sir Cliff Richard was allegedly praised in the 1970s for staying in Britain whilst Denis Healey “tax[ed] the rich until the pips squeak[ed]”. No such enthusiasm is due now.

The Christian pop star, The Telegraph’s ‘Mandrake’ columnist Tim Walker revealed in September 2010 “has not paid tax to the British Government on money he earns outside the country for some years” and himself stated: “I’m officially a non-resident, although I will always be British and proud of it”.

A citizen of Barbados for a number of years now, Sir Cliff loaned his residence on the island to Tony Blair and his family in 2006 after he felt the Labour leader looked “dwindled and haggard” during the war in Iraq. At the time, the singer told The Guardian that the then Prime Minister “must have great difficulty, in the same way people like myself do, in finding friends who want you for yourself”.

Ever the patriot, Sir Cliff’s support for this country’s austerity programme will no doubt be as welcomed by ordinary citizens as his presence recently on Wimbledon’s Centre Court. Game, set and not overly taxed.
