Time for change

The results of the European elections do not bode well for the future of British politics

The results are in and with the declarations of the results of the European elections, the clear winners are such parties as Nigel Farage’s UKIP and Marine Le Pen’s National Front. With this cataclysmic change in the political landscape, reason appears to have been thrown out with the bathwater.

It is time for the mainstream political parties to get a grip in the wake of UKIP’s victory

Our contributor Mr Gus Instinct was criticised by a section of our readers for commenting on this worrying trend on Saturday, but again here, today, we back his view up. We as a title do not mourn the trashing of the hopeless Liberal Democrats in Britain or the damage to the Conservatives and Labour, but what we do feel is that the nation should be far from “over the moon” at this result.

For us, though UKIP gained 27% of the vote in the European elections, this does not make it what Farage has called “the people’s army”. The majority of British law making is still controlled from Westminster and UKIP, in having not one Member of Parliament, lacks any real influence there. Even the Green Party has one.

Britain, we reiterate, needs leadership and such parties as UKIP will not provide it. It is time for the real political mainstream to get a grip.
