The hydrant has burst - Latest figures from Operation Hydrant - Norfolk CC Simon Bailey

Newly released figures relating to prominent figures under investigation as part of Operation Hydrant are truly shocking as is the £1 billion yearly cost of policing allegations of sexual assault

Yesterday, the leading investigative news source Exaro updated its readers on the numbers of individuals under investigation as part of Operation Hydrant. The figures are truly shocking in terms of their sheer volume alone.

Chief constable of Norfolk Simon Bailey commented on the investigation on Monday

Information released by the chief constable of Norfolk, Simon Bailey, reveals that the number of elected officials facing child sex abuse allegations has risen from 76 to 89 whilst the total number of “prominent suspects” has increased from 261 to 287 (broken down to include 89 national and local politicians; 145 individuals from film, radio and television; 38 from the music industry and 15 from the world of sport).

The overall total number of suspects under investigation by Operation Hydrant has risen from 1,433 to 2,016 at a time when national allegations of sexual assaults have gone up by 88% since 2012 to an anticipated figure of some 70,000 this year. Dealing with such allegations, Bailey, added is now in the order of £1 billion per year excluding “the costs to society in terms of the greater impact it has”. One is simply left asking: “Where will this all end?”
