Matthew Steeples suggests that David Cameron would do well to send Theresa May on her merry way
Those suggesting David Cameron will have to resign if Scotland votes ‘yes’ to independence are missing the point. It is not Cameron who should be under fire right now; it’s Theresa May.
Mrs May was shot down for the conflict of interest when she appointed Baroness Butler-Sloss GBE, PC to investigate the alleged cover-up of “VIP paedophile rings” in July. Now, in the wake of Butler-Sloss having resigned, May chose the 686th Lord Mayor of London, Alderman Fiona Woolf CBE as the replacement.
Yesterday, however, May’s poor judgement came to the fore again when the Mail on Sunday revealed that Mrs Woolf has links to the former Home Secretary Leon Brittan, a key figure in the controversy.
The connections cannot be clearer: Lord Mayor of London Mrs Woolf sits on the board of the City Week conference with Lord Brittan QC, PL, DL; judges the annual Dragon Awards scheme with his wife, Diana; gave Lady Brittan DBE a £50 donation for a charity fun run she took part in last year and has been a neighbour of the couple in Pimlico for the past decade.
Any suggestion that the current Home Secretary could not have been made aware of such links is frankly ludicrous. Theresa May has failed again and again as Home Secretary and that she plainly has so little sympathy with the victims of abuse at such places as the Elm Guest House speaks volumes.
The time is now: Theresa May must go.
