Justice for Evans

Nigel Evans MP cleared of all charges brought against him

Today, justice has been done: Nigel Evans, a friend, contributor to The Steeple Times and a fine Member of Parliament, has been cleared of sexual offences against seven men.

Justice has been done for Nigel Evans MP today

The jury in Evans’ trial – which started on 10th March – found the former deputy speaker of the House of Commons not guilty on all nine charges brought against him and effectively made clear that the “most credible witness before them was the man the Crown Prosecution Service decided to prosecute”.

During the course of the trial, several of Evans’ accusers changed their stories. One even stated: “I do not wish Mr Evans to be charged as a result of what happened to me. I am making this statement as a witness and not as a victim. And I believe that what happened to me has been dealt with and is a closed matter”.

In my view, this case should never have been brought to trial as all it has achieved is for shame to be brought on the CPS and the seven “ruthlessly ambitious” individuals whose accusations resulted in a good man’s name being dragged through the mud.
