Grating Greta

Matthew Steeples suggests Greta Thunberg to be well meaning but misguided; her approach to environmental issues and innovation is beyond over-simplistic

Sixteen year old ‘eco warrior’ and ‘school striker’ Greta Thunberg, on the surface, means well. She cares about our planet, but her oversimplification of environmental issues and the fact that her pushy parents have willingly enabled her to traverse the globe ranting and raving in a somewhat scary fashion is nothing but wrong.

In an interview with The Telegraph on Monday, veteran Finnish rally driver turned politician Arti Vatanen summed up the issue with this “complicated adolescent” when he stated: “Those people who are preaching at us that the sky is falling, like Greta Thunberg, say don’t build, don’t buy, don’t fly. Come on – that’s the end of humanity. We need progress. We need to go forward all the time. We cannot stop doing things. We just have to do things better. Progress needs to go on. We are like a flock of sheep – we are. We must think independently.”

Vatanen is spot on and as Thunberg set sail back to Europe aboard a catamaran to avoid taking a plane, the DePaul University professor of philosophy Jason D. Hill rightly also condemned her “apocalyptic world vision” as “belonging in the Dark Ages.” Both men are right: We do need people like Thunberg to speak out, but we must also be realistic and stop condemning innovation.

  1. She is an effing nuisance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do NOT send this bloody brat Down Under!!!!!!!!!!!! We don’t need her type here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sink the catamaran and do the world a favour!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. She may have good intentions, but you are right to point out that her failed actor and failed singer parents are the ones doing this for their own motives. They should send her back to school.

  3. Those of you condemning her are disgraceful. She is doing something about the issue and I admire her methods. You should listen and learn. She is right and you are wrong.

    • rubbish. She is being manipulated. Have her parents been fined for keeping her out of school? Failed parents raise failed kids. Greta the Gob.

  4. This freak is a bore,on “The Spectrum” I would think, didn’t realise the parents were like that not surprising, always learn from the oracle Steeples!I agree, back to school and SHUT IT!!!

  5. This girl believes she has integrity but not enough to consider the full range of scientific fact. She is a little too ‘born again’ in her zealotry and passion.
Imho she’s like a ventriloquist dummy….others words come from her mouth. She has neither experience nor wisdom, nor balance and needs to trip back to school and start to gain some.
The adults putting her in the quasi goddess position are to be blamed for the ongoing exploitation of a young, vulnerable girl.

  6. I agree with Matthew steeples and good that he is one of the few who at last speak out! GT seems to have sadly been exploited and manipulated for those who use her for political purposes or just even financial gain , it may be a good thing that she raised awareness but problems of such magnitude and impact are not solved by just pointing fingers and blocking streets, we need science, law, and realistic solutions, technology is improving things and we should nurture innovation

  7. She is just a puppet being used by pushy parents. She should grow up, stop learning by rote and get to grips with basic concepts and learn more about complex subjects That means going to school and to stop begging sea cruises

  8. One only has to read the 12 comments above to realise that the world is plastic ducked. Science is ignored. Matthew proudly quotes “we need to progress”…what? with mass global extinction…polluting the oceans and raping the planet. I congratulate a teenager (OK who is a bit of a bore and on the spectrum), who is at least trying to reverse the environmental catastrophe wreaked by the preceding generations.

  9. It is self-evident that we need innovation and technology to fight against the climate crisis. As far as I know Greta never condemned innovation. She does not want us to go back to the stone age, as many ignorants haters claim.
I’ve read and heard a lot from her.
    You obviously did not.

  10. She may lack humour, but she’s much more evolved than you and her critics. Luckily she probably doesn’t give a fig about what you or the other hotel bar club sandwich snackers think about her personally. She has more pressing priorities to attend to…
