Matthew Steeples suggests Boris Johnson needs to stop clowning around and tell the truth about his strategy to fight COVID-19 and Omicron this winter

Last December, the Prime Minister lied to us. Nothing new there, but in promising we’d have Christmas free of restrictions and then taking it away, he plunged the nation into misery and the economy further into the red.

Now, whilst The Sun this morning pinned the blame for the Omicron crisis on “doctor doom” Dr Jenny Harries and went as far as to call her the “grinch… determined to kill the festive spirit” and a woman who “reeks of over-compensating,” I’d go one further. Today, I remind readers that ultimately it is the captain whom should take responsibility for his clearly sinking ship.

Sadly for our poor (and getting poorer) nation, however, we’re stuck on a rudderless ship captained by the buffoon that is Boris Johnson and sadly we don’t even have any kind of opposition either. Sir Keir Starmer may be an affable chap, but why isn’t he doing his job and why is he busying himself with internal infighting instead?

Here, along with the disaster area that is also Boris Johnson-owned Brexit, we’ve been through what The Sun also called “a wretched few weeks” and sadly we’ve got plenty more of that to come. It is time now for the Prime Minister to man-up and to stop clowning around. It is time for him to tell us the truth about what he really intends for us all this Christmas; will we be just masked-up or yet again totally locked down?

God help us all and God, please save Christmas.

Yesterday, ‘The Guardian’ described Omicron as “the most worrying Covid variant yet.” Referencing how some international borders have already closed and the wearing of masks has been again enforced on public transport and in communal areas and shops in the United Kingdom, the paper emphasised that this new variant could be vaccine-resistant and added that this has “concerned governments and unnerved markets around the world.” Of a return to mask wearing enforcement in the UK, the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) stated: “Forces will increase officer visibility where possible in high-risk and crowded areas. If officers encounter individuals not wearing a face covering on public transport or in shops, they will engage with them, explain the risks and encourage them to comply.”
Boris Johnson is supposed to be the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, but he instead busies himself with an obsession with personal popularity and keeping his conniving, deviant wife happy with holidays and expensive wallpaper. Shame on him.
Sir Keir Starmer may have a new shadow cabinet and one that even ‘The Sun’ described as “an improvement.” He is, however, “listless” and “leaves floating voters cold despite the government’s many unforced errors.” Shame on him also.
Equally, though Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, is a decent man, his party still has just 12 Members of Parliament in the House of Commons out of a total of 650 members. Their sphere of influence, therefore, is beyond miniscule.
This morning the BBC reported that it had “seen [yet to date unpublished] leaked minutes of a meeting of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies held on Monday. They stated: “Officials should prepare now for a ‘potentially significant’ wave of infections while data on the variant is collected and analysed, they say. The government said it will take further action if necessary.” The corporation tellingly added: “They say that the earlier measures to reduce transmission are introduced, the stronger they are and the wider their geographical coverage, the more effective they will be. The situation could develop quickly over the coming weeks and decision makers may need to act while there is a high level of uncertainty including the potential need for stringent response measures.”
Dr Jenny Harries wants the nation to decrease social contact “a little bit” now, but is this message really just a coded easing of the country back towards a lockdown like last December’s?
