Boating with a Birka - BIRKA II, debate about banning burkas in Britain

Boat shrouded with a veil provides a reminder that it is again time to debate banning burkas in Britain

A photograph of a boat named BIRKA II covered with a black shroud provides a somewhat tongue-in-cheek accompaniment to the debate that rages on as to whether Britain should follow the lead of Australia and France and ban the burka.

Shared on Facebook by contributor Edward Kay, the image, taken at Port Gallic, Juan les Pins, should be sent to Britain’s Home Secretary Theresa May, a woman who believes that banning the burka “would be out of keeping with our nation’s longstanding record of tolerance”.

With Knightsbridge’s streets currently overtaken by parading foreigners – many of whom are burka clad – at night, we share a link to a 2011 article by The Telegraph’s William Langley. In it, the journalist argued that France’s ban of the burka in public places to be “right for France, beneficial to its Muslim communities and justified – if on no other grounds – as a statement in support of liberalism against darkness”.

It is time that Britain again considered a public ban for what the Islamic theologian Dr Taj Hargey has described as “a vile piece of clothing which imprisons women” and one that “is eagerly used by fundamentalist zealots to promote a toxic brand of extremist non-Koranic theology”. It is time to rid our streets of the misogynistic garment that is the burka.
